The
challenge of the project was to house, in a single structure,
five laboratories different in size, function and level of danger
to the environment. As the different spaces within each laboratory
likewise extremely varied in size, the use of any type of modular
scheme proved ineffective. Instead, a floor plan of a continuous
ribbon was introduced, with a bearing wall along the middle
and randomly positioned columns on the edges. Thus, each laboratory,
and in turn each particular room, can be assigned the exact
needed space. The wall divides the ribbon into two sections,
the outer 5.6 meters and the inner 4 meters wide, providing
adequate proportion even for the smallest rooms. Offices and
other more populated spaces are located in the outer layer,
secondary spaces in the inner. Laboratories are completely separated
and their communication routes do not cross. The building, located
on the outskirts of the city that have no relevant urban reference,
was conceived as a modernist structure among the greenery. The
uniform continued glass sheath is accentuated by a variation
of verticals in shape of randomly positioned columns on the
facade.
