The concept of the Faculty
of Mechanical Engineering assesses the location in Ljubljana
between Hajdrihova street, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics,
PUH building and Technological Park Building. Building comprises
three programme/volume segments: three wings comprising chairs
on the northern side, a stack of lecture rooms on the southern
side and the interaction volume in between, connecting the
public spaces while at the same time allowing the chair wings
some distance and individuality. Entrances to lecture rooms
are arranged via bridges from the galleries which run along
the chair wings. Bridges introduce a strong dynamics into
the composition; the stack of lecture rooms is topped with
library and restaurant volumes, both with excellent views
of the hills to the south of the city. On the northern side
of the interaction volume, chair wings are attached with communication
cores; the length of each wing corresponds to area allocated
to each chair. At the south-eastern corner of the site, the
volume containing dean's office and administration is attached
to the interaction volume, construction-free except for communication
core.
Beneath the interaction volume, administrative volume and
chair wings, three floors of underground parking are arranged,
comprising 600 parking spaces. The three outdoor areas comprise
the principal entrance plaza with a sculpture and two parks
between chair wings, a more intimate area for outdoor spring
lounging.
