A
new contemporary cultural centre is inserted into the existing
industrial building shell. Adjoining new urban areas provide
connective environments between water and culture as well as
culture and city. The original 19th century water mill volume
houses the centre's core, a 300-seat auditorium. A spacious
foyer next to the entrance square can serve as a central cultural
information office or exhibition space, a small cafe behind
is oriented to the river. Auditorium is accessed either from
the ground level or via staircases leading to the first floor.
The height of the existing volume allows for an additional floor
above the auditorium. This terrace with fine views of the surroundings
can house either a mediatheque or a rehearsal studio. The stage's
position on the ground level provides easy manipulation with
stage elements. Northern annex of the existing building houses
a music school. Structure's finishes reinterpret existing spatial
relations: previously a driving force in the mill, water manifests
itself in the dynamic shape of auditorium, a liquid drop inside
the mill's hard shell. The faceted foyer annex reflects the
waves of the river.
